My Story
As a teen, I always had the feeling I was bigger than my peers and maybe that was because those were the days we would get weighed at elementary school in alphabetical order and the girl behind me all through those years was very tall and slim. Or because my grandmother would say ‘Susie, you’re just solid.’
In any case, I would pour over my mother’s magazines, looking at the latest diet trend in hopes of finding the magic bullet that would make me ‘less solid’ or more in line with my letter “H” classmate.
I tried several diets over those high school years, and clearly remember when the Atkins diet emerged. I followed the no carb plan for 6 days, losing 6 pounds, but could barely walk up the stairs as I had so little energy. And of course the “weight” (i.e. – water) I lost came back in the next day or so after adding some carbs back into my diet.
That interest led me to the field of nutrition because I thought that if I studied nutrition, I would learn how to diet better!
What I have come to realize through my many years of working with clients is that everyone is capable of achieving a weight where they feel their best physically and emotionally. Whether you are having bariatric surgery or a non surgical route to lose weight, you might be surprised to learn you have to actually eat more healthy foods, not less overall in order to fuel your body and your life to feel well, and to find the best weight for you personally.
I was never going to be like my elementary school classmate because I was not built that way, but I came to appreciate my more ‘solid’ body which has helped me cross the finish line of the Boston Marathon, and helped me run several half marathons as well as a dozen 200 mile relay races.
I love good food, so the notion of restriction is really unpleasant for me, although I do have to say ‘no’ at times. The key for me — finding balance. We have all heard the phrase ‘diets don’t work,’ which is true. Restriction leads to feeling deprived and then it is easy to overdo; therefore I approach nutrition in a balanced way. I often say that no foods are off limits, it is just a matter of how much and how often.
In working with you as my client, I get an understanding of your lifestyle, and how you incorporate food into your day. I work to inspire you to become healthier, and to have better energy by choosing and balancing food every day.
Because of my interest in running and exercise I pursued a certificate in sports nutrition (CSSD). I enjoy helping athletes maximize their performance with foods that fuel them well and aid essential recovery. I would appreciate the opportunity to help you truly understand that although each new fad diet may sound like the ‘magic bullet’ to help with weight loss, you actually have the ability to live well and get to a place that is the healthiest for you without feeling deprived or eliminating any particular food group.
